Integrated Oil Pipeline Safety System

Main oil pipelines are an object of increased danger and have specific operating conditions due to their great lengths and distances of individual oil pipeline infrastructure facilities from remote control centers.

There is a need to ensure the safety of expensive equipment from attempt of thefts, acts of vandalism or deliberate failure.

Our proposed integrated pipeline security system allows monitoring and data collection from technological processes, forming a Single Point of Truth (SPOT).

Integrated security system features:

  • Obstruction free access to oil pipeline infrastructure facilities.
  • Instant notification to ensure quick response to any emergency situation or security breach.
  • Archive logs for future analysis of security elements like counter actions, response time and staff adequacy. Logs serve as evidence for future references.
  • Psychological tactics and alerts on security breaches like flashing warning lights, sound alarm and speakerphone voice messages.

System provides two security levels. First level consists of:

  • Security and fire detectors.
  • Access control system.
  • Sound and light fire warning devices.
  • Perimeter security system.
  • Video surveillance.
  • Audio communication devices.

The second level consists of:

  • Servers to control first-level activities.
  • Automated agent dispatcher (AWS).

Oil leak detection and localization system

Strict requirements for the transportation of petroleum products, environmental sanctions, and frequent cases of unauthorized withdrawal of petroleum products from pipelines demand constant monitoring and instant response to emergencies.

Leak Detection Systems (LDS) are used for tightness testing. These systems are real time software and hardware tools utilized in all modes of pipeline operation.

The leak detection system is designed to:

  • Help in revealing and eliminating hydrate plugs through oil pipeline depressurization.
  • Help in determining the time and location of leak.

Proposed leak detection system has four components for detecting and localizing leaks:

  • Mass balancing.
  • Wave method.
  • Pressure profiling.
  • Pressure control in isolated sections.

The pipeline leak detection system works in conjunction with the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system which quickly accounts for and notifies any changes in the operational process of pumps, valves and other process equipment, for example, changes in pressure or temperature besides leakage. This enables quick identification of critical issues and allows to take quick action which significantly increases the efficiency of the entire control system.

The system allows to obtain additional pipeline parameters such as its remaining life, volume, efficiency calculations, pump optimization, and reporting and helps in exploring ‘what-if’ scenarios.
